`Fatwa` against Salman for celebrating Ganeshotsav

Mumbai, Sept 13: Veteran Bollywood scriptwriter Salim Khan, the father of actor Salman Khan, Friday questioned a fatwa, religious edict, against him by some Muslim organizations for celebrating Ganeshotsav at their home here.

“What is the locus standi of these people? Who are they to question people's religious beliefs? Why don't they issue such a 'fatwa' against terrorists and terrorism, which is un-Islamic? The clerics are talking nonsense,” he thundered before a television channel Friday evening.

Mufti Manjar Hassan Khan Ashrafi Misbahi, the chief of Darul-Uloom Hijaziya Chishti, Mumbai, issued the 'fatwa' urging a religious boycott of the entire Khan family on Wednesday.

Last week, the Khan family was in the limelight when all members along with friends and relations celebrated the Ganeshotsav festival at their home in Bandra, northwest Mumbai.

The Khans celebrate Ganeshotsav every year, but this time, the live telecast of the family performing 'aarti' (invocation) of Lord Ganesh has irked some community leaders. Later, the family took part in a ceremonial immersion of the idol of Lord Ganesh.

The social boycott call was issued in response to a demand by Abdul Rehman Anjaria, member of the Advisory Council, Jama Masjid, New Delhi.

Anjaria, who is also member All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), said Friday evening that the 'fatwa' would be in force until Khan and his family atone for their actions of worshipping an idol of Lord Ganesh, which is not permitted in Islam.

Referring to Salim Khan's outburst against the fatwa, Anjaria said they would call for certified tapes of his comments from the TV channel soon.

“Depending on what he has said, the community elders may go for stringent action against the Khans, including a social boycott,” Anjaria explained.

According to Anjaria, Maulana Abdus Salam Bin Qasmi, president, Jamiat-Ul-Ulema-Hind, Mumbai, and Maulana Nizamuddin Ashrafi, principal, Darul Uloom Ali Hassain Ali Sunnat, Mumbai, who is also a member of AIMPLB, have also supported the 'fatwa'.

Salim and Salman Khan were not available for their comments in the matter.

Last year too Salman Khan had been issued a similar 'fatwa' by a Lucknow-based organization of Muslim clerics for joining the Ganeshotsav celebrations.

Justifying the decision to celebrate Ganeshotsav, Salim said his wife (Salman's mother) is a Maharashtrian Hindu and “worshipping Lord Ganesh is in my blood”.

Delhi govt announces Rs 5 lakh compensation for dead

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Saturday night announced a compensation of Rs five lakh for the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured in the serial blasts in the national capital.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit after an emergency meeting of the state cabinet here.

Besides monetary compensation, the government has also decided to provide free medical treatment for those injured in the blasts.

Hindus get set for colourful beach festival

THOUSANDS of Hindus are expected at the fourth Ganapati Visarjan ceremony being staged on Shoebury’s East Beach.

Saturday’s ceremony marks Ananta Chaturdashi, the birthday of the Hindu god of fortune, Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed god.

His birthday is one of Hinduism’s most sacred events and is India’s largest public celebration.

John Lamb, Southend councillor responsible for enterprise, tourism and regeneration, said: “I am delighted to welcome our Hindu guests to Southend.

“Southend’s Hindu community has pulled out all the stops to make sure it will be as vibrant as any of the festivals held in India.”

Organised by the Shree Jalaram Seva Trust, the celebration is thought to be the largest outside India.

Up to 4,000 people will be dressed in brightly coloured clothes and take part in traditional dancing.

Members of the trust will play drums and other instruments while a prayer tent will provide some space for anyone who wishes to pray or join in with religious chanting.

The free festival starts at 11am and lasts until around 4.30pm, but many idols, including one portraying Lord Ganesh, will be dipped in the sea at high tide, expected at 6pm.

The festival is open to people of all faiths, and families are particularly welcome.

After years of praying in a cellar in a west Berlin street, the German capital's 6,000 Hindus can look forward to worshipping in two brand new temples.

A local Hindu group this week announced plans to build a temple to Lord Murugan, just three months after other Hindus conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for one dedicated to the deity Ganesha.

"We want to create a religious place for worshippers from the south of India and Sri Lanka," said Nadarajah Thiagarajah, chairman of the Sri Mayurapathy Murugan Temple Association.

The association has agreed on terms with local officials in the Berlin suburb of Neukoelln to buy a 744-sq m plot of land for the temple for 170,000 euros ($260,000).

Total cost of the project is expected to be around 600,000 euros ($890,000), with the bulk of the funding coming from donations from Hindus in Germany, Britain and other countries, said Thiagarajah.

"We hope that construction work can start in July when a festival dedicated to Murugan takes place," he said.

When completed at the end of 2009 the temple will be able to accommodate 120 worshippers. It will have an 11-metre-high tower that its designers say will symbolize the link to heaven.

"Our present quarters in the Urbanstrasse are too small," said Thiagarajah, a 62-year-old former radio officer in the Sri Lanka navy who has lived in Germany since 1981.

Thiagarajah says the new temple is not meant to rival the larger one dedicated to Ganesha, which will also be built in Neukoelln, a working-class district with a large immigrant population and widespread unemployment.

"We are on very friendly terms and often meet up together," he said of the two groups.

Vilwanathan Krishnamurthy, vice president of the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple Committee, said the Murugan temple backers were asked if they wanted to join forces for a single project.

But they declined because they wanted one to their own god, who stands for war as well as beauty and family values. Most of the Murugan worshippers are Tamils from southern India and Sri Lanka.

Work on the Ganesha temple is expected to begin in April. Original plans called for it to be completed in 2009, but it looks as though it will not be finished until a year later.

The temple trustees say they have already amassed the 900,000 euros ($1.33 million) needed for the complex from donations made by Indian businessmen and other worshippers.

The temple will be constructed in a corner of the 84-hectare Hasenheide Park after officials in Neukoelln allowed the Hindu community to use the land rent-free until 2080.

The original design comes from an Indian specializing in temple architecture. German architects had to vet the drawings to make sure they conformed to German building requirements.

A 17-metre high ornamental tower dominates the entrance to the complex, which will contain one large temple with seating capacity for more than 350 and four smaller temples.

"Work on the tower and its ornamental carvings will take more than one year," said Krishnamurthy, who also chairs Berlin's Tamil Cultural society and gives dance and music classes in his spare time.

Stone carvings decorating the entrance will be imported from India.

The Berlin sites will bring to three the number of Hindu temples in Germany after the one in Hamm, a city of 150,000 in the populous western state of North Rhine-Westphalia. When completed, the Ganesha temple will be the second biggest in Europe after the Shri Venkateswara, which opened near Birmingham, England, in August 2006.

Three killed by militants in Manipur

Imphal, Sep 11 (PTI) Three persons were shot dead by unidentified militants in Imphal east district of Manipur early today, official sources said.

They said the militants brought three persons at Naharup Pangong area in the district and gunned them down from point blank range. The hands of two victims were tied by a cloth.

The motive behind the crime was not known but factional fight within the militant outfit appeared to be the cause of the incident, sources said.

The bodies, yet to be identified, were taken to Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital here for postmortem.

Rape accused fears for his life, wants bail

The man accused of raping two boys after inviting them for "a sleepover" says he isn't safe in prison and is asking to be released on bail.

The 42-year-old Nigel, Ekurhuleni, man is being detained at Boksburg Prison. He has been there for the past week.

The man, who told the magistrate during Wednesday's court proceedings that his life was in danger, did not reveal what he was scared of or the kind of danger he was facing.

The man, who cannot be named until he pleads, was making his second appearance at the Germiston magistrate's court on Wednesday after his arrest last week.






He is alleged to have raped two boys, aged 10 and 12, in a house that is in the same yard as a mosque at the Dukathole informal settlement in Germiston on August 25.

He has been living there for the past two months and is a caretaker.

Boys from the area used to attend Islamic lectures at the mosque, and the man is accused of inviting the two boys to sleep over and then raping them.

Police say he told the boys to keep silent about what happened to them and promised them R20 each - which they never received.

The rapes were reported a week later when the 12-year-old told his friend what had happened to him. The friend urged him to tell his mother, who then reported the matter to the police.

As he stood in the dock clutching a gold purse, the man - through his lawyer Barry Smith - stated that no "intercourse" had taken place between him and the boys and that no blood sample was taken from him.

Smith took over the case on Wednesday after the man's first lawyer withdrew his services because he had not been paid.

The case has been postponed to October 8 for further investigations.

The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis on Wednesday was accused of helping an Ecuadoran priest flee the United States last year after he allegedly molested a 4-year-old girl in Minneapolis.

The allegation is contained in a lawsuit filed in Ramsey County District Court against the archdiocese and the Rev. Francisco (Fredy) Montero, who left for Ecuador in July 2007 while under investigation for criminal sexual conduct involving the girl.

The archdiocese denied the allegations in the lawsuit.

"Archdiocesan officials had absolutely no role in the priest's departure to his home country," said church spokesman Dennis McGrath in a prepared statement. "We had no way to hold him here."

McGrath said when the girl's mother called church officials about the allegations, the archdiocese called police to investigate.

The girl is the daughter of a parishioner with whom Montero, 41, was living and having an affair while serving as a priest at the Church of the Incarnation in Minneapolis.

"That was how he gained access to her," Jeff Anderson, the attorney who filed the suit on behalf of the 4-year-old, said at a news conference Wednesday. "He used that position to ... molest her."

The suit does not seek specific monetary damages, but does say it will be asking for more than $50,000.

While Montero was living with the woman, he was supposed to be residing with the archdiocese's vicar general, Kevin McDonough, in St. Paul.

Anderson said during the news conference that McDonough and the archdiocese should have known that Montero, 41, wasn't living in the church rectory and should have been more vigilant in keeping track of his activities.

More importantly, Anderson said, the archdiocese could have ordered him to stay in the Twin Cities long enough for the police investigation to end.

Montero was arrested in the summer of 2007 and booked into the Hennepin County jail in connection with an investigation of criminal sexual conduct. He was released after being held over a weekend, pending further investigation.

'Not his keeper'

McGrath acknowledged that Montero was supposed to be living with McDonough but denied that it was the vicar general's responsibility to monitor Montero.

"Father McDonough was not his keeper," McGrath said. "When [McDonough] inquired about the priest's odd hours, he was told that the Hispanic faithful he served worked nights and often had need of his ministry, which seemed plausible."

Montero came to the Twin Cities in 2002 through an exchange program with the Ecuadoran diocese of Guandara, which also was named as a defendant in the suit.

Anderson said in the lawsuit that the Guandara diocese "sent an agent whom they knew or should have known was dangerous and unfit to Minnesota, where they knew he would work with vulnerable adults and youth."

By all accounts Montero was quite popular with the Spanish-speaking parishioners and the church hierarchy. In fact, he was something of a celebrity in the Twin Cities Latino community.

Not only did he help start a Spanish-language newspaper for the archdiocese, he was featured in numerous newspaper articles. Montero also hosted a weekly radio program.

Montero's arrest sent shock waves through the Latino community, which rallied around him despite rumors about his arrest and why he left the country so suddenly.

Montero left the United States about a week after his release from jail, before Minneapolis police and the Hennepin County attorney's office had completed their investigations.

McGrath pointed out that Montero's five-year tour in Minnesota was up last year. He said the Ecuadoran diocese recalled the priest after being notified of the allegations.

Pat Diamond, a deputy county attorney, said his office released Montero because there was insufficient evidence to charge him. He said police were asked to provide more information so a decision on charges could be made.

Insufficient evidence

Although Montero left, police completed their investigation last October. Diamond said the county attorney declined to press charges because of insufficient evidence.

Diamond said Wednesday that the case could be reopened if new evidence comes to light.

Before he left the Twin Cities, the archdiocese sent a letter to Montero's superiors in Ecuador detailing the allegations, including claims that he misappropriated large sums of money in Minnesota.

Anderson said local church authorities stripped Montero of his duties here, and he assumed that the priest would be defrocked once he returned to Ecuador.

Instead, Anderson said on Wednesday, his investigators discovered that Montero is in Ecuador working with children at his old parish.

"We're here to sound the alarm," Anderson said, "so that what happened to this child doesn't happen to any of the children in Ecuador."

Bibles to Baghdad – the Subtle Crusade and why it breaks American law.

Religious groups have been exploiting the US Military Postal Service to flood Iraq and the surrounding region with bibles since shortly after the World Trade Center atrocity. These organized religious operations operate under the stated goal of sending bibles to the troops, but the results tend to imply another unstated goal, the creation of a “subtle” Crusade that witnesses to and attempts to convert Muslims in and around Iraq.Before the invasion of Iraq one organization, Campus Crusade for Christ, through their Military Ministry set up a program that would allow anyone to send a solder something called a “Rapid Deployment Kit”. These kits each contain a New Testament Bible, a written 90-day prayer devotional, and a ‘how to’ booklet used to instruct solders in the methods of witnessing to others. In other words this is a ‘religious conversion kit’ designed to help Christians proselytize and it is meant to be given to new Christians to reinforce their conversion and assist them in witnessing to others.Initially these kits were sent to soldiers wherever a solder or the family of a soldier requested. But the number of kits ‘deployed’ rapidly increased. To date, Campus Crusade for Christ boasts that over 1.8 million Rapid Deployment Kits have been sent to members of the US military. And while some of the Campus Crusade websites are vague about which countries these kits are being sent, other Campus Crusade websites strongly imply that they are all going to soldiers in Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq.1.8 million pocket sized bibles – that’s over 257 thousand bibles a year. There are about 150 thousand American troops in Iraq, and another 30 thousand in Afghanistan and Kuwait. Many of these soldiers are on their third or fourth rotation, and most troops have been deployed to the Iraq multi-national force at least twice.This means that new bibles are coming in every year to soldiers who are likely to have already received one of these bibles during their last tour of duty. If every soldier serving in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan gladly accepted a brand new bible every year, there would still be a surplus of 77 thousand bibles per year.This leads to the obvious question – where are all the extra “Rapid Deployment Kits” going?Campus Crusade for Christ is not the only organization sending bibles to the Middle East through the US Military. Tim Todd Ministries, of Revival Fires fame, is sending bibles by the box to Iraq and Afghanistan. Tim Todd’s bibles seem to be designed to look like the standard Good News Translation Armed Forces Military Edition, but the cover is slightly different, and the bible contains, “… devotionals and study helps specifically for U.S. Military”. Another organization, the Open Window Foundation’s, “Operation Worship” set a goal to send a hundred thousand bibles to soldiers over a period of a hundred days.Individuals, like Brad Blauser, have also sent bibles to Iraq. Blauser sent 550 Zondervan “Starting Point Study Bibles” in 2006, with a goal to send 6,000 bibles in 2007. I have no idea how many bibles he has sent since then.Obviously Mr. Blauser’s operation isn’t of the same scale of Campus Crusade for Christ, but there are a lot of individuals like Mr. Blauser, and from speaking to my religious friends I’ve personally heard of two Fresno churches that are also sending bibles to Iraq. That’s an unscientific and statistically meaningless sample – but it is easy to assume that there are others doing the same thing. I’m guessing, but I would not be surprised to learn that half a million bibles and associated materials are being sent to US military members in Iraq and the surrounding area every year.Is this legal?Campus Crusade for Christ, Tim Todd Ministries, Operation Worship, and Brad Blauser all have something other than bibles in common. They are all breaking Federal law, and they are encouraging military members to violate the Uniform Code of Military Justice – the laws to which all troops must abide.The specific laws that they are breaking are the Federal Laws that provide for free or low-cost delivery of mail through the Military Postal System (MPS) – Title 39, Part 9, Chapter 3401 of Federal Code. This section details the way in which military members are allowed to post “free mail”. It also allows anyone located in the United States to post mail to military members serving overseas using domestic mail rates. Mail sent to APO / FPO addresses may be sent using standard postage – the mail is then collected at the APO or FPO and shipped using military transport to its final destination.The Department of Defense Directive, Postal Manual DoD 4525.6-M (PDF) quotes Title 39 of the Federal Code as its authority to direct the actions of servicemen who work in Military Post Offices. This manual clearly states that military members are not allowed to receive mail as an “in care of” address for those who are not authorized to use the MPS.Military members are not allowed to use the MPS as their own shipping pipeline for profit or non-profit purposes. For example, although military members or their spouses may be allowed to work from on-base housing, they are not allowed to ship products for their business through MPS. Mary Kay and Amway distribution through the MPS is strictly forbidden.Even non-profit, charitable efforts are not authorized. Recently the Stars and Stripes Newspaper wrote about Operation Care, a grass roots effort to distribute donations from Americans to needy people in Afghanistan. Organized by military volunteers in Bagram Afghanistan, Operation Care solicited donations that were delivered through the Military Postal Service and then distributed to Afghanis. While commendable, it was against both Federal and military regulations.In 2006, Operation Care processed 16 tons of goods. When this organization’s practices were brought to the attention of the Military Postal Service, the MPS ordered them to stop. From the follow-up Stars and Stripes article:
"Although Operation Care is a noble cause, it is in direct violation of multiple DoD (Department of Defense) Policies listed in the DoD Postal Manual 4525.6-M," wrote Army Col. David Ernst, deputy director of the Military Postal System Agency in an e-mail addressed to members of the group and various civilian and military officials."I appreciate your cooperation in helping to end the illegal use of the MPS to operate a business and transport humanitarian items for distribution," he wrote. "Please direct them to seek an alternative means to conduct Operation Care."The military is actually being very kind to those who volunteer for Operation Care. It would have been well within their rights to bring those responsible before courts-martial. Military members involved are guilty of violating articles 92 and 134 under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and could be subject to anything from reduction in rank, to imprisonment plus forfeiture of rank and benefits.It would be possible, but more difficult to prosecute those civilians in America who organized the donations for Operation Care.All of the organizations detailed here deliver bibles exclusively through the Military Postal Service.This leads to the second obvious question – why are Christians getting this ‘free pass’ to flout the law?The military does not like to be embarrassed. Article 134 forbids embarrassing actions by forbidding, “all conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces”. But maybe they just don't know what is going on?At approximately a quarter-pound per Rapid Deployment Kit, it is difficult for the military to ignore that the MPS is shipping well over 30 tons of these kits each year. This number only accounts for the Campus Crusade for Christ’s shipments, the tonnage is likely doubled because other organizations use larger bibles that contain both the old and new testament. Operation Care’s mere 16 tons of delivered goods doesn’t come close in comparison.Presumably the US military has noticed this drain on their resources. Operation Care was founded in 2006 and was noticed and warned in 2008. Campus Crusade for Christ’s effort has been ongoing since 2002, and they have received no equivalent warning. It is reasonable to assume that the US military is not embarrassed to assist with flooding bibles into to an Islamic country. This implies governmental approval of this subtle crusade.And the supposition that "the troops need bibles" is somewhat faulty. Military chaplains may order bibles through the military supply system in order to give them to troops who ask for them. Although the supply system is slower than MPS, ordering bibles through it can be logistically planned for in advance.So assuming that the US Military realizes that they are flooding Islamic areas with bibles, it could also be assumed that they approve of the practice. Perhaps I'm building a house of cards here, but the Christianization of the US armed forces has been well documented (link 1, link 2, link 3, link 4).I am all for military members getting what they want and need. Every soldier who wants a bible, or the Torah, or Talmud, or Qu'ran or any other religious text should be able to have one. And if the military supply system can't get a religious text to a solder then kind donations through the Military Postal Service should certainly take up the slack.But just how many bibles should each soldier receive? And just what do these Christian agencies expect soldiers to do with all those surplus bibles?I have written three other, shorter entries on the ongoing effort to flood Iraq with bibles, which can be read here. A former Roman Catholic Priest in Muganza Parish, Butare Prefecture, Southern Rwanda, Monday stated before the International Criminal for Rwanda (ICTR) that a genocide-accused Elie Ndayambaje,50, was trusted by his Muganza commune as an upright Mayor and "had faith in him".

Testifying for Ndayambaje's defence, the 20th witness, an Italian Priest Tiziano Pegoraro, told the judges William Sekule(presiding), Arlette Ramaroson and Solomy Bossa, that the accused was pro-active in bringing development in education and water among others with view to improving welfare of his people,


"He [Ndayambaje] will also receive visits from outside the commune to learn of education projects," the Italian Priest said, who earlier lifted his protective measures and decided to testify in an open court.

"I did collaborate with Ndayambaje in sectors such as schools for social advancement," stressed the Priest when led by Ndayambaje's lead counsel Canadian Pierre Boule.

The priest, who worked in Rwanda for nearly 11 years, and most of his time he spent in Muganza, noted that some of the communes envied achievements of the accused. "Ethnic groups [Tutsis and Hutus] co-habitated...during his era social climate was excellent," he claimed.

In 1992, Priest Pegoraro said Ndayambaje ceased his mayorship to enroll at the Butare University to study economics. However, Ndayambaje was re-elected to the same post in June, 1994.

He decried witnesses who have testified against Ndayambaje, saying that "they have erred".

The priest continued his testimony in the afternoon and is expected to be cross-examined by the prosecution Tuesday.

Ndayambaje is the sixth and the final defendant in the "Butare Trial", which has been the longest and the largest before the UN Court. The trial started in June 2001.All six accused have pleaded not guilty to genocide and crimes against humanity during 1994 killings, which according to UN claimed lives of more than 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

Ex-Greek Orthodox priest accused of molesting boy in '70s

A 46-year-old Streamwood man has accused his former priest of sexually abusing him more than 30 years ago and Greek Orthodox church officials of attempting to cover it up, according to a lawsuit that marks the fifth allegation against the defrocked priest.

Nicholas Katinas, who is married, was pastor at Assumption Church in Olympia Fields from 1969 to 1978. The plaintiff, a former altar boy known as John Doe 124, said Katinas sexually abused him as a 15-year-old at the Olympia Fields church during 1977 and 1978. The suit also said three other boys in Katinas' congregation were abused by the priest.

Lawyers said church officials had reason to suspect Katinas, 73, of improper behavior with boys years before the plaintiff was abused, an important element of the lawsuit. By accusing the church of concealing the abuse, the plaintiff's lawyers are hoping to avoid the statute of limitations on the abuse allegations.

"They have done what we have so long complained about in the Catholic Church," said Jeff Anderson, an attorney representing the plaintiff. "They hide, shuffle and cover for [the abusers]. They kept that knowledge secret among themselves and they concealed it from police and parishioners."



Specifically, the lawsuit said the church knew of Katinas' behavior before he began to abuse the plaintiff, a piece of information that might have saved him from abuse. The lawsuit also said Katinas abused another altar boy younger than 18 on 10 to 12 occasions in the early 1970s. Another allegation is that Katinas attempted to assault a boy as young as 13 in spring 1974.

The lawsuit names Katinas, Assumption Church, the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, which presides over the Greek Orthodox Church in the U.S. and consists of 540 parishes, 800 priests and 1.5 million members.

"It was well known to the defendants . . . that a number of Greek Orthodox priests in and outside of the Chicago metropolis region [have] sexually abused minors before and during the time that Katinas abused the plaintiff," the lawsuit said. "Despite this knowledge, defendants . . . failed to adopt and implement pertinent preventative policies and procedures."

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America did not return calls seeking comment.

Katinas—who has not faced criminal charges—could not be reached for comment.

Many details gathered in the lawsuit are the result of interviews conducted for lawsuits against Katinas in Texas, where he was transferred in 1978.

Katinas spent almost three decades as a priest at Holy Trinity Church in Dallas before he was defrocked in 2006.

Lawyers said that during his tenure at Holy Trinity, Katinas abused at least four other boys. All have filed suit in Texas against the priest, lawyers said.

Katinas is believed to be living in Greece, where he went just before the lawsuits in Texas were announced, Anderson said.

The suit seeks more than $50,000 for the physical and psychological damages suffered by the plaintiff.

Priest's rape case postponed

A Muslim cleric accused of raping two young boys, appeared briefly in the Germiston regional court on Monday.

Control prosecutor Neil Oberholzer said the maulana had his rights explained to him during his first court appearance and the case was postponed until Wednesday.

It is expected that at this appearance a bail application might be brought.

Last week, two boys, aged 10 and 12, reported to the police that they had been raped, allegedly by a Muslim cleric at a Germiston mosque.

Captain Steady Nawa said the boys were attending a religious lecture on Islam on August 25 when a 49-year-old maulana, who had been working at the mosque for three months, asked them to sleep over there.






The boys alleged that the man watched movies with them and also asked them to take a shower with him.

"The boys also alleged that they saw the maulana mix something like dagga and smoked it. He gave it to the 10-year-old to smoke, but the 12-year-old refused to smoke it, but he was forced to," said Nawa.

After smoking the joint the maulana allegedly ordered the boys to undress while he also stripped naked.

He allegedly ordered the 12-year-old to "play" with his genitals and then allegedly raped him in front of the 10-year-old. He also ordered them to wash after he allegedly raped both of them, said Nawa.

On August 29, the maulana allegedly promised to give them R20 in exchange for their silence, but never did. Nawa said the boys informed a friend about the incident and were advised to tell their parents.

The maulana faces two counts of rape. He remains in police custody in Boksburg prison. - Sapa

Zamzami, referring to the fact that Al-Maghraoui wanted to make his fatwa unassailable reminding that Muhammad "married Aisha who was nine", reiterated that the sheikh used the event as a pretext for this "scandalous practice". "The era of our Prophet is completely different from ours," he said on the issue. "These days a marriage of the kind would be a true injustice towards the girl. A true aberration." "Aberrant" was also the judgement of Najia Adib ('No one touches my children'), according to whom "this sheikh is simply encouraging paedophilia. If he is so deeply convinced of what he thinks, let's tell him to get his daughter married". But perhaps, she explains, this unknown sheikh was searching a little media attention. And concluded her interview with the Moroccan daily: "This type of people look at Islam from the point of view which is convenient for them. It is a restrictive vision of Islam. And it is bad. Fatwas like these show the lack of reasoning from those who issue them. I cannot understand via what intellectual road or for what mental construction they come to such aberrations". The law in Morocco envisages the minimum age for getting married at 18 years for both men and women. Marrying below this age requires the consent of the parents and of a judge. EDUCATION ALARM IN ARAB WORLD, 95 MILLION ILLITERATE PEOPLE

(By Cristiana Missori) (ANSAmed) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 8 - With 95 million illiterate people, of whom 75 million aged between 15 and 45, the Arab world confirms itself on the first place in the global ranking of the countries whose citizens do not know either to read or write. These are the merciless data presented in Rome this morning during the conference titled "Literacy in the Mediterranean", organised at the Chamber of Deputies as part of the celebrations for the International Literacy Day, called by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. "One out of three citizens is illiterate", Arab League Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ALESCO) director Mongi Bousnia reminded. This is double the world average (16%). Women are the most affected by the phenomenon, actually 46.5% do not know either to read or write. And also most of those who live in the villages and in the most depressed areas of the Arab world have never had a chance to sit at the school desks. The main causes for that phenomenon," Bousnia pointed out, "are surely the excessive birth rate", as the close correlation between exponential demographic growth and the rise of illiteracy rate (71%) shows in the five most populated states which are part of the 28 countries part of ALESCO. It is not only the demographic boom but also the abject poverty which afflicts these people, as well as the disinterest of the Arab governments which have ignored the literacy issue too long. "In the past thirty years we made many efforts to reduce the rate of the people without education, but the road to go is still very long," Bousnia said. In relative terms, the data speak of a constant drop. In 1970 the rate of illiterate adults in the Arab states was 75%, in 1990 it was 48.7%, in 2000 it was 39.9%, while in 2007 the average of illiterate people in this area of the world is around 30%. "Nevertheless, in absolute terms, the number of illiterate Arab citizens is growing at a skyrocketing speed," Bousnia said. From 50 million illiterate in 1970, there were 60 million in 1990s, to the current 95.5 million out of the 335 million citizens of those states. There have been many common efforts - also of the economic type . taken since the 1960s by the Arab governments, but the road is yet to be climbed. "Eradicate illiteracy is a way to increase security in the Mediterranean area," the ALESCO director said. Here, he believes, the role of the woman is fundamental for fighting against the mentality of hatred and violence which lies on the basis of terrorism. However, investment in literacy programmes is needed. "Tunisian President Ben Ali has launched an appeal to the rich oil-producing countries so that their governments allocate one dollar per each barrel of crude in projects to fight illiteracy in the Arab states," Bousnia said. Not only the institutions, but also the Arab civil society, with its non-governmental associations and organisations, can give its contribution. It is thanks to the NGOs that the poor people in Egypt come close to education, Raafat Abdel Baki, delegate of the Egyptian Education Ministry, explained during the day of study organised by the National Union to Fight Illiteracy, by the Observatory of the Mediterranean and the University of Castel Sant'Angelo. PESHAWAR, Pakistan: The death toll in a devastating suicide blast has reached 35, officials said Sunday, as Pakistan prepared for Benazir Bhutto's widower to take over as president.

The suicide attack Saturday underscored the militant threat facing the country and its president-elect, Asif Ali Zardari, who was expected to be sworn in by Tuesday.

Dozens of people were wounded in the bombing when an explosives-packed pickup truck blew up at a police checkpoint on the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of the North-West Frontier Province.

Police said the large amount of explosives indicated that the bomb might have been intended for a more politically important target.

Zardari, 53, who has little governing experience and spent 11 years in jail on corruption charges that remain unproven, will succeed Pervez Musharraf, who resigned last month under the threat of impeachment.

Unofficial results from voting in the two houses of Parliament and four provincial assemblies indicated that Zardari, the leader of the Pakistan People's Party, had won 479 of 702 votes.

His closest competitor, Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui, of the Pakistan Muslim League-N, won 153 votes, and a third candidate, Mushahid Hussain Syed, received 43 votes. The results were expected to be certified by the Election Commission.

Zardari has the tacit approval of the United States, which views him as an ally in the campaign against terrorism. He has promised a tougher fight against Taliban and Al Qaeda militants in the nation's tribal areas, which they virtually control. They use the areas as a base from which to mount assaults on American and NATO troops fighting in Afghanistan.

After Bhutto was killed in December, Zardari became the leader of the Pakistan People's Party, which was founded by Bhutto's father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Zardari led the party to victory in a parliamentary election Feb. 18 and formed a coalition with Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-N.

The coalition collapsed last month amid a dispute over whether to reinstate the 60 judges fired by Musharraf when he imposed emergency rule in November.

In a sign of conciliation, Sharif telephoned Zardari on Saturday to congratulate him on his victory, according to television accounts.

The White House issued a statement of support Saturday.

"The United States congratulates Asif Ali Zardari on his election as president," said Gordon Johndroe, a White House spokesman. "President Bush looks forward to working with him, Prime Minister Gilani and the government of Pakistan on issues important to both countries, including counterterrorism and making sure Pakistan has a stable and secure economy."

Zardari's aides have promised that he would agree to the elimination of a constitutional provision that allows the president to dismiss Parliament, long considered a weak institution.

The minister of information, Sherry Rehman, a senior member of the Pakistan Peoples Party, said the relationship between the presidency and Parliament would be better balanced under Zardari, resulting in a "new era of democratic stability."

After the vote, Zardari spoke briefly on the lawn of the prime minister's residence. Flanked by his two teenage daughters, Bakhtawar and Asifa, Zardari said, "Parliament will be sovereign. This president shall be subservient to the Parliament."

But there was considerable skepticism among politicians and in the news media that Zardari would agree to a diminution of power. An editorial Saturday in the daily newspaper Dawn said it hoped that "his commitment to make himself a titular head of state will not waver."

Most Pakistanis looked on the presidential vote with considerable indifference, a sharp contrast to the excitement during the political campaign leading to the parliamentary elections.

In the Aabpara market in Islamabad, some storekeepers viewed Zardari's victory as a foregone conclusion. Several men said it was good for Pakistan to have a president and a prime minister from the same political party, reflecting the official line of the Pakistan People's Party.

"He can be a good president because the whole party is behind him," said Malik Zahoor, 50.

But some vendors said they believed the corruption charges against Zardari have made him unsuitable for the presidency.

Man held for 'raping' 12-year-old boy

A 49-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old boy in a mosque in Dukathole, Germiston, East Rand police said on Thursday.

The man, who had been with the Dukathole mosque for three months, was arrested at 2am, said Captain Steady Nawa.

The boy was attending a religious lecture on Islam when he was asked to sleep over by the man on August 25, Nawa said.

"During the night the man allegedly raped the boy and promised him R20 for his silence. The boy reported the incident to his mother, who then alerted the police," said Nawa.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Germiston magistrate's court on Friday facing a rape charge. - Sapa

Karachi, Sept 6 (ANI): A new study has found that the Hindus belonging to lower (Scheduled) castes are unofficially declared as untouchables and are given a second-grade-citizen treatment. Their kids are made to clean the school premises and are forced to sit on back benches.

The study also found that Hindu women belonging to scheduled castes were the most vulnerable and considered sexually available by men of Muslim-dominated communities.
Since the SC Hindus are economically weaker with no social support or political leverage in the community, their young women/ girls were lured into matrimony or abducted and wed through forced conversions.

The abduction of young scheduled caste women is frequent and often reported in regional newspapers. And they are kidnapped or lured and then used sexually and sometimes abandoned after being kept in custody, found the study.

According to the study findings, the untouchable Hindus were denied barber services and offered food and drink in separate crockery.

The report of the research carried out by the 'Long Behind Schedule' on caste-based discrimination in Pakistan, was released at the Karachi Press Club last evening.

In schools, scheduled caste students are obliged to sit on back seats, leaving the front seats for students from non-scheduled castes. Though they are not asked to do it on a regular basis, the practice has been in place for so long that it has become a custom. Scheduled caste students are also made to clean the schools, the Daily Times quoted the study findings as saying.

The study was conducted in two districts of Sindh - Tharparkar and Umerkot - and two district of the Punjab - Rahimyar Khan and Bahawalpur - for one year. Besides, a survey was also conducted on 750 households.

The study was conducted on behalf of the International Solidarity Network (ISDN) and Indian Institute of Dalit Studies (IIDS) in collaboration with the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER) and Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP).

An overwhelming majority (79 percent) of the scheduled caste population said in reply to the survey's questionnaire that they faced discriminatory treatment of one kind or another and the situation is the worst in southern Punjab. And, 69 percent of those surveyed said that their upper caste Hindu and Muslim neighbours either did not invite them to their social gatherings such as weddings, or if invited, they were served food separately.

This attitude was relatively more prevalent in Rahimyar Khan (87 percent) than in Tharparkar (60 percent), found the survey. (ANI)

Muslims urinate on Torah scrolls in Hebron

Jewish worshippers returning to Hebron's Cave of the Patriarchs after Muslims were given exclusive access to the holy site at the weekend reported that the cabinet containing their Torah scrolls had been urinated on.

One Jewish resident of Hebron told Israel National News that he and several other men had to move the cabinet to another part of the room because of the strong smell of urine in the area where it is usually positioned.

Additionally, green Hamas flags were found placed in the windows that mark the burial sites of Abraham, Isaac, Sara, Rebecca and Leah.

The Cave of the Patriarchs is split into Jewish and Muslim sections, as both groups revere Abraham.

Several times a year, the holy site is given over to one or the other group exclusively to mark special holy days. Muslims were given exclusive access to the Cave of the Patriarchs on Friday to mark their holy month of Ramadan.

Another Jewish resident of Hebron said that some damage to Jewish religious articles or the Jewish side of the site is found every time the Muslims take over.

ஜேக்கப் அந்த வகுப்ப றைக்கு விரைந்து வந்து பார்த்தார். அப்போது அங்கு விநாயகர் பூஜை நடப் பதை கண்டு அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்தார். உடனே அவர் வகுப்பறையில் பூஜை நடத்திய 7 மாணவர்களையும் `சஸ்பெண்டு' செய்தார். பூஜையில் கலந்து கொண்ட மாணவர்கள் மீதும் உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும் என்று எச்சரித்தார்.

விநாயகர் பூஜை நடத்திய தற்காக 7 மாணவர்கள் சஸ்பெண்டு செய்யப்பட்ட தகவல் ஜெய்ப்பூர் முழுவதும் காட்டுத் தீயாக பரவியது. இதையடுத்து பாரதீய ஜனதா நவமோர்ச்சா அமைப்பைச் சேர்ந்த தொண்டர்கள் மாலை 6 மணிக்கு செயின்ட் சேவியர்ஸ் பள்ளிக்கு ஆயுதங் களுடன் திரண்டு வந்தனர்.

பின்னர் அங்கிருந்த மேஜை நாற்காலிகளை அடித்து நொறுக்கினார். பூந்தொட்டிகளை எடுத்து கண்ணாடி ஜன்னல்கள் மீது வீசினார்கள். இதில் ஜன்னல்கள் தூள் தூளாக உடைந்து நொறுக்கினர். இதைப் பார்த்ததும் பள்ளி யில் இருந்த மாணவர் கள்-ஆசிரியர்கள் ஓட்டம் பிடித்தனர். பாதிரியார் ஜேக்கப் தனது அறைக்குள் ஓடி உள்பக்கமாகப் பூட்டிக் கொண்டார். இதனால் அவர் உயிர் தப்பினார்.

தகவல் அறிந்ததும் போலீசார் விரைந்து வந்து கலவரக்கரர்களை விரட்டி அடித்தனர். ஆனாலும் அப் பகுதியில் தொடர்ந்து பதட்டம் நிலவி வருகிறது.

Britain's first state-funded Hindu school will open this month, despite controversy over admissions policies.

The Krishna-Avanti primary in Harrow, north London, is already heavily over-subscribed.

It will have its own temple, vegetarian catering facilities, and lessons in Sanskrit and yoga.

The school - opening for reception pupils on September 15 - was originally aimed at strictly-vegetarian families, but it provoked claims that it would rule out most of the estimated 15,000 Hindu children living in the borough. The requirement was later ditched, with admissions now being devolved to local temples.

The opening is expected to be the first of many following a Government recommendation that more faith schools should be created where local demand exists.

At the moment, there are 4,621 Anglican schools in England, 2,027 Roman Catholic schools and 26 Methodist schools. A further 38 are classed as Jewish, nine are Muslim and three Sikh.

In total, around a third of all Government-funded schools in England are linked to religious groups.

Critics claim the move risks dividing communities along faith and racial lines.

This week, Accord, a new coalition of secular groups and religious leaders, was formed to lobby the Government to strip schools of the power to select pupils on the basis of faith alone.

But Nitesh Gor, chairman of the new Hindu school's governing body, said: "If we are going to continue to have faith schooling in this country it is unreasonable and discriminatory to deny just a handful of Hindu parents the choice that is already available to much larger numbers of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and others.

Faith schools have an excellent record of providing high-quality education and outperforming comparable non-faith schools."

Four face 128 child sex charges

A CATHOLIC brother, a priest, a former priest and a lay teacher face a total of 128 child sex charges dating back to the 1970s at two schools.

The brother, priest and teacher were arrested and charged today, and police warn more arrests could follow.

Former students of St Stanislaus' College at Bathurst in central west New South Wales have alleged that boys were sexually abused during hypnotic late-night prayer and chanting sessions.

Brian Spillane, 65, from Narwee in Sydney's southwest, was charged in May with 33 offences and yesterday had a further 60 charges laid against him after eight more alleged victims came forward.
Today, a 66-year-old Catholic brother, arrested this morning at Marsfield in Sydney's northwest, was charged with 28 child sexual offences relating to his time at the same school.

He was bailed to appear at Bathurst Local Court on September 15.

Mr Spillane is due in court on the same day to answer the new charges against him.

Also appearing on that day will be a 65-year-old priest from Armidale who was this afternoon charged with four offences relating to the alleged pedophile ring.

A 63-year-old Queensland man, a former teacher at the Anglican All Saints College in Bathurst, was also arrested and charged today with three counts of indecent assault relating to the alleged abuse of a boy at that school in 1973.

He was bailed to appear at Bathurst Local Court on November 17.

No prayers or chanting were thought to have been involved in the alleged attack on the student at All Saints, police said.

They said the only link between the incidents at the two schools was the timeframe in which they occurred, but a combined police strike force would incorporate both investigations.

Detective Superintendent Michael Goodwin said allegations had been made by 13 former students from St Stanislaus', and one from All Saints.

"I can't rule out the fact that there'll be further investigations. There may be more arrests," Det-Supt Goodwin said.

"Let's not forget that this whole investigation commenced because of one person having the courage to come forward.

"It's true, I dare say, that the courage of this one person has prompted the other people to come forward.

"I encourage anyone that may consider themselves a victim of sexual abuse at any school in Bathurst to make contact with the police."

St Stanislaus' principal John Edwards has said the school was served with a search warrant on July 3 containing the names of three former staff members.

Earlier today Det-Supt Goodwin said both Mr Spillane, and the 66-year-old brother arrested today were among those named.

It was not immediately clear whether the 65-year-old priest arrested this afternoon was the third person originally sought.

Mr Edwards today said he was aware of the new charges against Mr Spillane.

The school was hoping for a thorough investigation by the police, he said.

"We just want to emphasise that we are encouraging the police to be very thorough in their investigation so that ... the needs of the community are best served," he said.

"We need to have any allegations of misconduct investigated, addressed and resolved."

Five on trial in Sudan over U.S. diplomat killing

KHARTOUM (AFP) -- Five Islamists, wearing shackles and religious dress, went on trial in Khartoum on Sunday over the killing of a U.S. diplomat and his driver on charges that would see them hanged if found guilty.

The court sat for about 30 minutes amid a heavy presence of riot police and a highly charged atmosphere that saw the defendants spit at two Western female journalists while their supporters shouted ""Down Down USA"" and ""Allah Akhbar.""

John Granville, 33, who worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and his 40-year-old Sudanese driver Abdel Rahman Abbas were shot dead in their car before dawn on New Year's Day.

His murder sent shockwaves through the sizeable Western community in Khartoum, a city usually considered one of the safest in Africa.

Before a packed courtroom, prosecutor Mohamed al-Mustafa described the defendants as religious fundamentalists and accused them of murder and weapons possession, saying they plotted to attack people celebrating the New Year.

Mustafa charged that the men held a meeting in Atbara, in northern Sudan, then rented a house in the capital's twin city of Omdurman and bought weapons in preparation for their attack.

On the evening of December 31, they drove around looking for victims until they found Granville and his driver, he said. They shot them with a pistol and escaped in a second getaway vehicle to Atbara, he charged.

Wearing traditional white gowns and religious caps, the bearded suspects chatted among themselves in the dock while the prosecutor was speaking.

The defense lawyer asked the judge for the trial to take place in a larger courtroom so that relatives of the accused and journalists, some of whom were not able to find seats in the packed chamber, could attend.

Defense lawyer Adel Abdul Gani told AFP the court would meet again on September 11, when the investigator in the case would present his report.

He said the judge would only ask the defendants to enter a plea once the prosecutor has made his case.

U.S. Embassy personnel and an American lawyer, who addressed the judge through a translator, were also in the courtroom. As they left, men in the corridor outside shouted ""we are against you"" and ""down, down USA"".

Among the suspects is a son of the head of Ansar al-Sunna, a pacifist Muslim sect in Sudan that has no political affiliation but has links to the orthodox Wahhabi sect dominant in Saudi Arabia.

As they walked through the court compound, one suspect spat in the face of a Western woman reporter. As they headed up the stairs, in their shackles, they sprayed spit down on to the heads of the woman and another colleague.

According to the United Nations, up to 300,000 people have died and more than 2.2 million have fled their homes since the conflict between the Arab regime and ethnic rebels erupted in 2003. Sudan says 10,000 have been killed.

Trusted Muslim centre manager jailed

The trusted manager of a Muslim community centre has been locked up after he stole more than £16,000 and “frittered it away” on cars, drink and nights out with his friends.

Sajid Karim was employed by Sandwell Council to run Tipton Muslim Community Centre, in Wellington Road, from 2001 to 2006.

The 33-year-old, who was jailed for nine months at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday, was in charge of the centre’s accounts and cheque book. The court heard how the father of three was responsible for managing the finances of groups that used the centre and entrusted to pass the payments on to the council.

Miss Rhiannon Jones, prosecuting, said Karim received two cheques from Bangladeshi Women’s Association in March 2004 and instead of passing them on to the council, paid them into the centre’s account, which he later raided. Between June 2004 and January 2005, Karim, of Wilson Street, Tipton, stole a total of £16,850.

His theft was uncovered following a review of the accounts in 2006 and he was dismissed from his post.

Miss Jones said: “He said he would pay the money back and had £6,000 to give but nearly two years later he hasn’t repaid any money. He said he spent it on cars, drinking and going out with friends.”

Karim, who is married and has three children aged under 10, pleaded guilty to theft at Warley Magistrates Court on August 4.

Mr Jas Mann, defending, said his client had previously worked as a waiter and was thrust into the role of manager untrained as he was a well-known volunteer and his father was a respected trustee at the local mosque.

Mr Mann said: “For a significant period of time, he was a good servant. Now he is doomed to work in modestly-paid jobs.

“The money was squandered and frittered away, the suggestion of repayment was a pipe dream. The trust has been eroded in his family and he is ashamed.”

Karim is now working for Parcel Line, Mr Mann added.

Judge John Warner described the crime as a “gross and repeated breach of trust”.

“This was deliberate dishonesty and you were not subject to financial pressures, you can’t have that as any sort of excuse,” he said.

“This was simply dishonest greed and you took advantage of the people that put trust in you.”

100 die in Shia-Sunni clashes

ISLAMABAD: More than 100 people were killed in two days of clashes between Shia and Sunni tribes battling for supremacy of a tribal agency on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The clashes brought the death toll in four weeks of fighting in the Kurram tribal agency to well over 400, with many more injured.

Kurram has been in the grip of sectarian unrest since April 2007 widely attributed to the Taliban’s efforts to gain a foothold in the agency. The Sunni tribesmen are said to be backed by the Taliban which wants to take control of the agency, one of the seven in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas, to gain unhindered access over the routes into Afghanistan.

The government has been a mute onlooker to the pitched battles, unable even to break a nearly year-long economic blockade by Sunni tribesmen of Parachinar, the main town in Kurram and a Shia majority area. The road between Parachinar and Peshawar has remained cut off since November 2007.

All-out retaliation


The clashes over Sunday and Monday between the Shia Turi tribe and the Sunni Bangash tribe were particularly bloody.

They began after the Bangash ignored a unilateral ceasefire by the Turi to launch attacks on them. It led to an all-out retaliation by the Turi against the Sunni tribe’s stronghold in a village called Bagzai and both sides used heavy weaponry.

The day-long battle on Sunday was reportedly also marked by two suicide attacks on the Turi, which the Shia tribesmen are underlining as evidence that the Bangash have been taken over by the Taliban. Over 90 people were killed in Sunday’s fighting alone, after which the Turi claimed to have taken control of Bagzai.

Nine more people were killed in clashes that continued in the agency on Monday until six Sunni tribes assembled in the evening for a jirga and declared a unilateral ceasefire. But the Shia tribesmen said the Sunni tribes were powerless to enforce the ceasefire as they were controlled by the Taliban.

Meanwhile, in Bajaur tribal agency, the government halted military operations from midnight on Sunday for the month of Ramzan raising concerns that it would allow the Taliban to regroup in the agency. No ceasefire has been announced in Swat yet.

The Daily Times commented that it was a “weak-kneed response to the challenge of internationalised terror”.

Ramzan package


“In fact, the enemy will strike most effectively during Ramzan because Muslims are not willing to be active during the fasting month. Let us be frank. The Muslims who kill fellow Muslims have a poor record as far as observing the holy month is concerned,” it said in an editorial headline “Ramzan package for terrorists?”

But thousands among the estimated 3,00,000 people displaced by the aerial bombardment of Bajaur in the operations have started returning to their homes from refugee camps in cities across North West Frontier Province despite apprehensions that fighting may erupt again.

Analysts are linking the suspension of military operations in Bajaur to Saturday’s presidential election, which PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is favoured to win. The suspension made it easier for the Jamiat-e-Ulema Islami to announce its support for Mr. Zardari over the weekend

Beheaded 18th-century Swiss 'witch' pardoned

Anna Goeldi, the last witch executed in Europe, was granted a posthumous pardon Wednesday, more than 200 years after she was beheaded for a young girl's death, the domestic ATS news agency said.

Legislators in the eastern canton of Glarus voted unanimously to exonerate Goeldi -- publicly put to death in 1782 for "poisoning" an eight-year-old girl with pins -- on grounds she had been subjected to an "illegal trial."

"The witch will continue to live as a symbolic figure, attracting attention for her injustice," the Glarus cantonal government said, although the local Protestant church and right-wing Swiss People's Party opposed the move.

By way of amends, the Glarus parliament earmarked 120,000 Swiss francs ($109,000 US) toward a play about her life.

A museum dedicated to her is already open in Glarus.

Up to 100,000 people were burned alive in Europe on suspicion of sorcery, mainly between the 15th and late 17th centuries, according to historians. Eighty per cent were women.

Three teenage girls have been buried alive by their tribe in a remote part of Pakistan to punish them for attempting to choose their own husbands, in an "honour" killing case.

After news of the deaths emerged, male politicians from their province, Baluchistan, defended the killings in parliament, claiming the practice was part of "our tribal custom".

The girls, thought to have been aged between 16 and 18, were kidnapped by a group of men from their Umrani tribe.

They were driven to a rural area and then injured by being shot. Then, while still alive, they were dragged bleeding to a pit, where they were covered with earth and stones, according to the findings of Human Rights Watch, the international campaigning group. Officials, speaking off the record, confirmed the killings.

However, six weeks after the deaths, no one has been arrested, amid claims of a cover-up. According to several accounts, Baluchistan government vehicles were used to abduct the girls, and the killing was overseen by a tribal chief who is the brother of a provincial minister from the ruling Pakistan People's party.

Some reports said that two older relatives of the girls had tried to intervene, but they too were shot and buried with the girls while still alive. "This is a heinous criminal offence," said Ali Dayan Hasan, of Human Rights Watch. "We have corroborated it and cross-corroborated it, but the second the police admit that it happened, it would trigger an investigation."

Hasan said that, with a presidential election on September 6, one in which Baluchistan's provincial parliament would be strongly relied on to deliver votes, action that would antagonise the region's politicians was highly unlikely.

In Pakistan's national parliament, an MP from Baluchistan, Israrullah Zehri, said on Friday that "this action was carried out according to tribal traditions", a view backed up by some other male lawmakers, who attacked a woman senator who had raised the case.

"These are centuries-old traditions and I will continue to defend them," Zehri added over the weekend.

The killings happened in the Naseerabad district of Baluchistan. Although so-called honour killings are not unusual, burying the victims alive seems to have been brutal even by tribal standards.

"It is very common for women in these cases to be deprived of an honourable burial. This is to make sure others learn the lesson," said Samar Minallah, a human rights activist based in Islamabad.

Sarang Mastoi, a local journalist in Baluchistan with Pakistan channel KTN, said that the villagers were scared to talk openly about the crime, but he had been taken by some to see the burial site.

Under tribal - not religious - tradition, marriages are carefully arranged by elders. Marrying without permission is considered an affront to the honour of the tribe. Sadiq Umrani, a provincial minister, has admitted that the girls were buried alive but denied the involvement of his brother.

An editorial, published in Pakistani daily The News yesterday, said: "Surely the government should be seeking the murderers, not protect [them] through some dark conspiracy of silence. The fact the act was 'kept quiet' means the government sympathises with such doings."
