The Muslim scholar was Tuesday re-arrested after five more boys alleged that he sexually assaulted them, police said.

East Coast Demerara Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner David Ramnarine confirmed that a total of nine boys including four brothers have leveled the accusations against the Mufti.

“The eminent scholar has been arrested after five more boys came forward and made allegations against him,” he told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com).

Earlier Tuesday, Police Chief of Criminal Investigations, Assistant Commissioner, Seelall Persaud had confirmed that medical examinations conducted on one of two boys at that time had confirmed that he was anally sexed.

Up to late Tuesday, police did not divulge details about whether the three others were similarly sexually assaulted.

The scandal broke last week when the mother of four sons was approached by an official of the Child Care and Protection Agency (CPA) and told of the allegations against the Mufti.

The alleged instances of sexual assault took place at a Mosque based in Section D, Turkeyen between December 2011 and January 2012.

Prior to the Mufti’s arrest, he had been placed on GUY$150,000 station bail and asked to report periodically.

He has been sent on leave pending the outcome of the investigation and prosecution.

Police are yet to dispatch a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. Authorities have 45 days within which to compile evidence before seeking a committal before a magistrate.

Earlier Tuesday, the rights organisation- Red Thread- picketed the Ministry of Human Services, urging that swift action be taken against the accused. The organisation is worried that the man could tamper with the victims, their parents or other associates.

Two Iranians who converted from Islam to Christianity were stabbed by masked me in Haugesund last week. The attacker shouted 'Kuffar' (Arabic for non-believer) during the attack.

The attack happened Tuesday evening, when both Christian Iranians were out walking in Haugesund. They were suddenly attacked by three masked men armed with knives, who shouted 'kuffar' while they stabbed the two.

A nurse passing by gave first aid and then an ambulance brought them to hospital, reports Haugesunds Avis.

According to the police, one of the victims was stabbed twice in the back and the other was stabbed in his side. No perpetrators have been caught.

The two victims want to remain anonymous and have not spoken of the assault. They've lived in Norway for many years. One of them converted in Norway, the other did so in Iran and managed to flee to Norway after he was abused and imprisoned for his faith.

They're both active in a local evangelical church.

'They've very active in the community, and have also bore witness to their faith during meetings,' says their pastor, who also wants to remain anonymous, since he often travels to Muslim countries where Christians are persecuted.

He's certain that the attack was religiously motivated. "I'm totally sure of it. Since the attackers shouted 'kuffar' during the attack, I have no doubt about it."

He says he didn't expect such things to happen in Haugesund. "It's very dramatic and surprising. I didn't take that into account. I hadn't heard of threats against any coverts in the area."

Former Muslim Extremist in Uganda Flees Wrath of Ex-Colleagues

Convert to Christianity faces death threats; father committed suicide over conversion.

NAIROBI, Kenya, January 27 (CDN) — A former member of a Muslim extremist group in Uganda who converted to Christianity is in hiding in Kenya, his movements severely restricted following threats to kill him.

Hassan Sharif Lubenga, 54, was a sheikh and member of the Buk Haram, a violent group of Islamists whose name suggests the Bible is corrupt and therefore forbidden. Originally from Chengera, seven kilometers from Kampala, the husband to four wives began his conversion process four years ago; in June 2011, he said, after various dreams and visions in which Jesus appeared to him, he made a full commitment to follow Christ.

Lubenga fled to Kenya last July 10 after hostilities peaked, and upon returning to Uganda in September he received messages on his cell phone from mujahidin – Islamic fighters – threatening to kill him, he said. He reported the threats to Chengera police, who told him they would investigate, but in October a friend told him that he’d heard in a Chengera mosque that his former colleagues were enraged and planning to kill him.

“My heart got troubled, but the voice of Jesus continued whispering to me to witness for Jesus without fear,” Lubenga said.

When Lubenga felt like giving up on his new faith, he said, he received a call from Bishop Umar Mulinde, his former pastor at Gospel Life Church International who was scarred in a Christmas Eve acid attack by Muslim extremists (see “Muslim Extremists in Uganda Throw Acid on Bishop,” Dec. 28, 2011). Mulinde told him the church was praying for him, and Lubenga was deeply heartened, he said.

“All my family members have deserted me,” he said by telephone. “The Muslims are looking to kill me. I need protection and help.”

The Islamic extremists who had declared war on “infidels” such as Lubenga had been threatening him since 2007, when he first began to speak of dreams and visions of Christ. Dangers peaked in 2010, when Muslims saw him visiting a church in Uganda. By April 2010, one of his four wives had poisoned him because of his budding faith in Christ, leaving him unconscious, he said. After his recovery, he fled Chengera to a village 25 kilometers from Kampala, Kiwangala.

In 2007, he said, he told his Muslim jihadist friends that he had seen Jesus in a dream. He said they had warned him, “Do not make such a mistake again – we are ready to help you. If you continue with this move, then we will destroy you. You know that you are a sheikh.”

He reported the threats to police at Insanje sub-county, Wakizo district, angering his colleagues, who sent threatening letters.

“I explained to them that it is Jesus who came to me, and not I who sought Him,” he said. “They were furious. They then kidnapped me and blindfolded me for three days, coupled with beatings. They demanded I deny Jesus as the Son of God, which I consented to because I feared that they were going to kill me.”

In 2009, another message from Jesus came to him in a vision, he said: “Do not hide your Christian faith.”

Within a few months, another threatening letter arrived: “If you do not join Islamic Jihad, then we shall kill you.”

Lubenga decided to go on pilgrimage to Mecca, in accordance with the tenets of Islam. While there, however, he heard another voice, he said: “You have decided to forsake me, and instead you are here to accuse me.”

“I then saw Jesus high up with white robe,” he said. “He laughed. I just left the place but got sick for two weeks. I visited Mohammed Ali, the head of majini [evil spirits], who promised that the majini will come and help me. But I did not receive any healing.”

Jesus continued appearing to him for three months in visions, he said.

“I could not resist, so I decided to believe in Him and started openly declaring that Jesus is my personal Savior,” Lubenga said. “The whole family and clan members were out to destroy me. I was poisoned by my own family.”

His father, Morshid Kabide, came to his house in July 2010 to establish the truth of the rumors he had heard, Lubenga said.

“I heard that nowadays you do go to church, and you are claiming that you saw Jesus,” his father told him. When he answered in the affirmative, reaffirming his decision to follow Jesus, his father was crestfallen; he later committed suicide, leaving a letter that read, “I have decided to kill myself because my son became a Christian” and urged all family members to curse him.

Lubenga said that since then he has been in hiding, growing more terrified as threats intensified.

“But I kept my faith in Jesus,” he said. “I sold some of my belongings to build the church structure at Chengera, outside Kampala.”

As a result of this act, threats on his life grew more shrill, and he fled to Kenya.

Two of his wives had left him in 2007; one has decided to stay with him, and he has been sharing his faith with her. The fourth wife, whom he married five years ago, is a Christian who has also received death threats; six months pregnant, she has fled to an undisclosed location.

Police Arrest Two for Beheading 4-month-old

Two persons, Tanko Haruna and Muhammed Yusuf were arrested by the Niger State Police Command for allegedly being in possession of a four-month-old baby girl’s head in a polythene bag at Erena, in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

LEADERSHIP SUNDAY gathered that, the two young men were arrested by the policemen on a highway in the area after they were sighted with a bag which also contained tomatoes.

It was further gathered that the policemen were taken aback when they searched the bag and discovered a head of a four-month-old baby girl.

The suspects were then, arrested and transferred to the Police Headquarters, Minna. Both suspects were about to board a vehicle heading to an unknown destination when the police stop-and-search team apprehended them.

HARGEISA — At least eleven illegal immigrants from Somalia have been killed this week as they crossed into Saudi Arabia from Yemen according to the Somali embassy in Sana’a.

Hussein Haji Ahmed, Somalia’s Deputy Ambassador to Yemen, said the bodies of eleven Somali immigrants were recovered near Yemen’s border with the oil rich kingdom. He insisted scores of others were reportedly missing. Mr. Ahmed also informed local media that hundreds of Somali immigrants caught slipping into Saudi Arabia were systematically abused with many either killed, tortured or kidnapped by Saudi and Yemeni forces and sometimes by rebel groups.

The ambassador added women fleeing the conflict in Somalia were often sexually abused as they tried to cross the border. He said he discussed the matter with both Saudi and Yemeni security personnel. He claimed that the two countries pointed fingers, each claiming the other was responsible for the abuse.

Mr Ahmed declared that Arab security forces were behind the killings of the Somali immigrants. The ambassador also criticized Somaliland and Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland accusing them of refusing to accept southern-Somali refugees returning from Yemen.

Finally he called on international right groups to investigate the abuses and bring those responsible to justice.

Thousands of Somalis fleeing drought, famine and violence flood into Yemen every month despite its own humanitarian crisis. In total, the United Nations estimates around 200,000 Somali refugees are now in Yemen with many using the historical migratory route to else where to seek a better life.

Classified as a failed state, Somalia has not had a functioning central government for more than 20 years and has been wracked by fighting between various militias and the ever increasing list of mini-states.

The leader of a radical Islamist sect launching increasingly bloody attacks in Nigeria has rejected offers for a negotiated peace, instead promising to kidnap government officials' family members and bomb schools, according to an internet audio message allegedly posted by the group.

The message by Imam Abubakar Shekau of the sect known as Boko Haram comes amid continuing unrest in north Nigeria following the group's attack in Kano that killed at least 185 people. A daylight attack on Muslim traders in the north killed 15 people, while gunmen also have kidnapped a German there.

Shekau's 40-minute message also for the first time discusses Boko Haram's goal: Complete adoption of Islam across Nigeria, a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people split largely between a Christian south and a Muslim north. And Shekau said he remains prepared to order more violence to accomplish that.

"If (Nigerian security forces) are going to places of worship and destroying them, like mosques and Quranic schools, you have primary schools as well, you have secondary schools and universities and we will start bombing them," Shekau said.

"Touch us and see. That is what we will do."

The video posted to YouTube on Wednesday shows a still image of Shekau sitting on a beige sofa, a Kalashnikov rifle at his back. Speaking at times in Arabic, English and the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, Shekau said negotiations suggested by President Goodluck Jonathan between the sect and the government will not happen.

"He's lying. He cannot do it," Shekau said. "If Jonathan does not repent as a Muslim, even if I die myself, Jonathan's going to see. He's looking at me like I'm nobody, but he'll see."

In the message, Shekau acknowledged that Boko Haram carried out the Jan. 20 attacks in Kano, Nigeria's second largest city, that killed at least 185 people. Gunmen from the sect armed with explosives and assault rifles, some wearing army and police uniforms, others suicide car bombers, attacked police stations, immigration offices and the local headquarters of Nigeria' secret police.

However, Shekau denied killing civilians in the attack, claiming the sect's gunmen tried to protect the more than 9 million people who live in the important city in Nigeria's north. Government officials have said many of those killed by the sect were Muslim civilians.

"We're killing police officers, we're killing soldiers and other government people who are fighting Allah and Christians who are killing Muslims and talking badly about our Islamic religion," Shekau said. "I am not against anyone, but if Allah asks me to kill someone, I will kill him and I will enjoy killing him like I am killing a chicken."

Shekau also said the sect's attack on Kano came after the arrests, and in some cases torture, of sect members' wives and children. Nigeria's federal police often arrest family members to force those they want into turning themselves over to authorities.

The Associated Press could not immediately verify the authenticity of the recording, though it sounded like others attributed to Shekau in the past.

Boko Haram wants to implement strict Shariah law and avenge the deaths of Muslims killed in religious and ethnic violence across Nigeria. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, has now killed at least 262 people in 2012, more than half of the at least 510 people the sect killed in all of 2011, according to an Associated Press count.

The sect also began specifically targeting Christians living in the north at the start of the year, exploiting already existing tensions between the two religions in a nation where religious and ethnic rioting has killed thousands in recent years.

The attack by Boko Haram comes during continued unrest across Nigeria's north. In Kano, gunmen kidnapped a German citizen Thursday working for Dantata & Sawoe Construction Company Ltd.

German Foreign Ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke told journalists Friday that the embassy and a ministry crisis unit were working hard to resolve the case.

"I can't yet report any substantial progress," Peschke said.

Meanwhile, Zamfara state spokesman Ibrahim Muhammad Birnin Magaji said Friday that gunmen killed 15 Muslim traders on their way to market. Birnin Magaji said the gunmen burned the bodies of their victims in a rural village in Katsina state on Thursday, about 120 miles (200 kilometers) from Kano.

He said authorities suspect an armed robbery attack, but no goods were reported missing.

Abductions of Hindu girls, forced conversions to Islam, on the rise in Pakistan

Bharti, A 15 year-old, is the 18th Hindu girl to have been reportedly abducted, forced to convert to Islam, and forced to marry a Muslim man, in the Lyari area of Karachi, a city in the south of Pakistan, the Express Tribune of India reported yesterday. The real number is probably much higher. In 2009, in the province of Sindh 18 Hindu girls had also been kidnapped.

The family of the teenage girl filed a complaint with Bhagdadi police station, and a court hearing has begun. On the first day of the hearing Bharti -- who has been renamed Ayesha, apparently after the favorite wife of Islam's prophet Mohammed -- appeared "clad in a black 'abaya' " and hardly acknowledged her parent's presence.

According to The Times of India, her father "[Narain] Das brought a copy of the National Database and Registration Authority's record, which states that his daughter is 15 years old. However, certificates of her conversion to Islam and her marriage claim she is 18."

It is common in cases of child abduction and forced marriage for the age of the child bride to changed, and for the child to be made much older than is the case.

At the launch of its "Perils of Faith" report on the threats to minority religions in pakistan, a spokesperson for the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said “they kidnap girls who are younger than 15 but they say they are adults and that the girls have accepted Islam and been married of their own free will."

The HRCP said that Hindus receive no support in pakistan, and that the "conversion issue is not acceptable, it has discouraged Hindus in Pakistan.”

A 10-year-old boy in Dubai molested his five-year-old niece many times and his kisses were so violent that they left blood marks on her neck before he was discovered by the girl’s mother.

The incident was among nearly 68,000 police cases handled last year by the “liaison with the victim” programme created by the Dubai Police to deal with crime victims and tackle cases away from police and courts.

One of the most traumatic cases involved a 10-year-boy who molested his five-year-old niece every time she was taken by her father to his house once every two weeks following the divorce of his wife. Her mother later noticed blood marks on her neck and was told by the little girl that her uncle (father’s brother) tried to kiss her many times.

“The mother also learned that the boy stripped off all his clothes in front of the girl,” said Colonel Jamal Al Jallaf, deputy director of the Dubai Criminal Department for Supervision and Management.

Quoted by 'Emarat Al Youm' Arabic language daily, he said another case involved a divorcee who mistreated two little daughters of her husband.

“The housemaid at neighbouring flat informed us of this problem…she told us that the woman does not feed them nor does she care about their tidiness…she also prevents them from watching television or using the computer at home and often locks them up in one room…the maid told us that she was buying food and feeding them secretly,” Jallaf said.

He said the programme then set up a special team to verify the maid’s claims and found that what she said was true.

“We then summoned the two children’s father and faced him with such facts…he admitted that his wife is hot-tempered but said he did not know about her mistreatment of his daughters as he is out of home between 9am and 10pm..…we then made him write a statement promising to stop this practice and to look after his two daughters.”

Rapist in suicide attempt at police station

A Kuwaiti man accused of raping a 12-year-old local boy used his Arabian dress to hang himself at the police station but was rescued in the last minute, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The unnamed defendant had been locked up at the police centre after confessing to raping the boy in his car, 'Al Anba' said.

“Police kept him inside the cell as they were waiting for forensic test results…….an officer then saw through security cameras that the man hanged himself by his dishdasha,” the paper said.

“The officer hurried inside and got the man off…the defendant was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.”

Private tutor raped teen while mom slept next door

A private lessons teacher raped a 13-year-old schoolboy for nearly a month at the boy’s home in Dubai before he was caught red-handed by the student’s mother, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The unidentified teacher, in his 40s, had forced the boy to take off his clothes and threatened him to let his parents punish him by telling them he was not doing well in the lessons, 'Emarat Al Youm' said.

The boy’s mother was having a short sleep in her bedroom when the Arabic language teacher told the boy to strip off.

“He then raped him and continued to do so for a month until the teacher came one day and was told by the mother she would go to sleep,” the paper said.

“After a while, the teacher told the boy to take his pants off…as he was doing so, the mother came and saw him….she screamed at the teacher, who fled.”

The paper said the teacher was arrested later and stood trial on Sunday, adding that court adjourned hearings to early next month.

Police cut tree to catch offender

Kuwaiti police had no choice but to cut a tree to catch a boy who climbed up to escape being arrested for disturbing neighbours.

Several police men had chased the boy following a complaint from neighbours but he had apparently outpaced them and climbed a tree in the neighbourhood in the capital Kuwait City.

“The policemen tried to persuade him to get down but he refused.…they stood there thinking what to do,” the Kuwait daily 'Al Watan' said.

“In the end, they decided to call in the civil defence, who came and used an electric saw to bring down the tree and the boy.”

LUCKNOW: Although Salman Rushdie has visited India dozens of time since the row over 'The Satanic Verses' erupted and subsided almost two decades ago, the country's top Islamic seminary, Darul Uloom, Deoband, has chosen the eve of UP elections to demand that the author not be allowed to enter India. Rushdie is expected for the Jaipur literary festival later this month.

This puts the Congress, which is wooing UP's Muslims, in a serious bind.

Darul-Uloom's rector, Maulana Abdul Qasim Nomani, has appealed to the Centre and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to deny author Salam Rushdie a visa, saying that "the man whose blasphemous writings have hurt the sentiments of Muslims all over the world must not be allowed to set foot on Indian soil".

Trashing the Maulana's appeal may only derail efforts of the Congress to win over Muslims. Moreover, the 135-year-old seminary's clout extends beyond UP to across India.With its rector pressing for Sonia's intervention, the demand would be hard to ignore."We expect the government to be prompt and tough, the way it was over the Russian court's ban on Gita for allegedly promoting terror activities," Nomani said. "Rushdie's visit is bound to affect the sentiments of the minority community and it must therefore evoke a sharp response as well. We hope that the government would not pursue a dual policy," Nomani added.

"The Gita ban had led to much heat in Parliament and the message from India was loud and clear. The 'hukoomat' must, therefore, send out an equally strong message by forcing a ban on the man known for mocking Islam and stands "kharit"(rejected) by Islam," the rector's appeal says.

Chief spokesman of the seminary, Maulana Ashraf Usmani, said, "We expect Hindus to support us. Last month, when Gita controversy was at its peak, Deoband was first to publicly condemn the proposed ban".

Meanwhile, Rushdie tweeted, "my Indian visit, for the record, I don't need a visa."

The Darul Uloom's demand that Salman Rushdie be denied a visa to attend a literary festival in India could be dismissed as absurd were it not for its timing. Surely those who run the seminary in Deoband are well aware that Rushdie has been to India several times since the 1988 release and subsequent ban of his controversial book Satanic Verses. That's what makes one suspect that the current demand is somehow linked to the upcoming polls in Uttar Pradesh. The government, however, shouldn't be pressured into denying him a visa. As always, the Indian-born British author should be allowed to come to India.

Saudi Arabia’s feared religious police arrested a Filipina nurse for having what they described as an illegitimate meeting with an Arab man at a shopping mall in the conservative Gulf kingdom.

Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice rushed towards the couple at a café in the western Red Sea port of Jeddah after suspecting they were lovers.

“When he saw them, the man fled…the Commission members arrested the Filipina nurse, who told them the man is her boy friend and that she met him there to say good bye before returning to her home country.”

In its report, Kabar Arabic language daily said the Commission members detained the nurse and mounted a manhunt for her lover.

Rally supports blasphemy law, seeks release of Taseer killer

LAHORE – Speakers at a convention have vowed to revive the spirit of Pakistan Movement and work for solidarity and integrity of the country. They said spiritual offsprings of the Mushaikh would fight alongside the military to safeguardthe geographical boundaries of the country.

Tahaffuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalat Mahaz organised Save Pakistan Convention at Data Darbar on Wednesday after the conclusion of Namoos-e-Risalat Rally that started from Minar-e-Pakistan. Raza-e-Mustafa Naqashbandi, Muhammad Khan Qadri, Muhammad Ali Naqashbandi, Raghib Naeemi and other leaders led the rally largely participated by people from various walks of life. The participants were carrying flags and placards and banners inscribed with writings in support of blasphemy law and demands of immediate release of Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, killer of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer. The participants also chanted slogans in favour of Mumtaz Qadri.

After the rally, TNRM organised convention at Data Darbar where speakers warned of launching a coffin-clad march towards Islamabad if Mumtaz Qadri was not released honourably. Addressing the convention, Raza-e- Mustafa Naqshbandi said according to Islamic laws laid down by Quran and Sunnah, Mumtaz Qadri is a hero of Islam who punished Salman Taseer for violating a law of Islam. Muhammad Khan Qadri demanded of the Chief Justice of Pakistan to intervene and decide Mumtaz Qadri’s case in accordance with the Islamic laws. Muhammad Ali Naqshbandi said self respecting Muslims of Pakistan would not rest till honourable release of Qadri. Allama Khadim Hussain Rizvi said Muslims were faced with another crusade and reminded the believers of the Quran’s proclamation that Jews and Christians could never be friends. Raghib Naeemi said it was time Sufis must come out of monasteries to purge the country of the US agents and impure elements.

Dr Ashraf Asif Jalali said Mumtaz Qadri punished a blasphemer and all those conspiring against him must keep in mind that Allah’s court is Supreme over all worldly courts. Pir Yar Jan Saifi, Mujahid Abdul Rasool, Haseeb Qadri, Abdul Mustafa Hazarvi, Tahir Tabassum, Sardar Raza, Ahmad Ali Kasuri, Naeem Javed Noori, Arshad Naeemi, Mufti Imran, Ahmad Raza Sialvi, Pir Shafiq Ahmad, Sh Azhar, Allama Asghar and Zaheerul Hasan also spoke on the occasion. The resolutions passed by the convention demanded President Zardari to exonerate Mumtaz Qadri and punish blasphemer Aasia.

Bangalore orphanage in dock over sexual abuse of young girls

Junior girls in Muslim Orphanage, the state’s biggest orphanage run by the Waqf Board, have been found to be sexually abused by their seniors under the patronage of some of the orphanage staffers. This shocking revelation has been made following visit by a team, led by State Minority Commission (SMC) chairman Anwar Manippady and members of the commission and Women & Child Welfare Department (WCWD), which inspected the orphanage located near Commercial Street on December 31.

“Several junior inmates of the orphanage confirmed that they were not only sexually harassed by their seniors but were also forced to witness homosexual acts. Instances of senior girls torturing and beating their juniors if their demands were not met, too, came to light,” Manippady has stated in a report submitted to chief secretary SV Ranganath.

“It’s a gross violation of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2001, and the shocking part is that some members of the institution (the orphanage) are also involved in the immoral activities,” Manippady has said. “Upon verification we found that the manager, identified as Ashraf, is a habitual offender and has also been harassing an ex-inmate of the orphanage regularly.”

The commission’s report seeks action against the guilty.it has recommended the termination of service of the entire existing staff of the orphanage, and the filing of criminal charges against them for allowing the junior girls to be sexually exploited.

The SMC has also demanded that the government hand over the administration of the orphanage to the WCWD.

The inspection team also found large-scale misappropriation of funds allocated for the running of the orphanage, Manippady told DNA.

SMC and WCWD members conducted the inspection of the orphanage after receiving a series of complaints. The commission had then submitted several representations to the Waqf Board, seeking immediate action against the guilty and to put a stop to the sexual abuse of the junior girls at the orphanage.

“After waiting for four months we decided to take up the issue again and visited the orphanage to conduct an inspection,” Manippady said.

But Waqf Board chairman Riyaz Khan rubbished SMC’s report, saying the inspection was done to tarnish the image of the board and its members. “It’s all being done since the commission members have not been elected in the board,” he said.

Khan said the Waqf Board had sacked a warden for misbehaviour and an accountant for forging and misappropriating funds. He said the duo had been hand in glove with the SMC to tarnish the image of the institution

He said that this was because of a change in how people see men and women and added, "The western educational system and also our educational system do not segregate on the issue of gender"

He said that the aim of the West in carrying out this educational system is to remove the sexual differences between men and men.

Nigeria's descent into holy war

A wave of terrorist violence across Nigeria has raised fears of an alliance between the Islamist Boko Haram movement and al-Qaeda's franchise in the Sahara. Colin Freeman reports from the Boko Haram stronghold of Maiduguri.

Like many other Christian outposts in the spiritual homeland of Nigeria's "Taliban", the Victory Baptist Church in the northern desert city of Maiduguri no longer just relies on God for protection.

A modest whitewashed spire in a skyline dominated by mosques, for the last month it has had a military guard to defend it from Boko Haram, the militant local Islamist sect blamed for a string of terror attacks nationwide in recent weeks.

The soldiers in the sandbagged machinegun nest outside the church, though, were unable save three members of the flock last week.

On Wednesday evening, three days after Boko Haram ordered all Christians to leave Muslim-dominated northern Nigeria for good, Ousman Adurkwa, a 65-year-old local trader, answered the door of his home near the church to what he thought was an after-hours customer. Instead it was two masked gunmen.

"They shot my father dead, and then came for the rest of the family," Mr Adurkwa's other son Hyeladi, 25, told The Sunday Telegraph the following day. "One chased my brother Moussa and killed him, and the other shot at me, but my mother took the bullet in the stomach instead."

Hyeladi spoke as weeping parishioners gathered for an impromptu memorial service in the Adurkwa family compound, where the parlour carpet was still stained with blood from the gunshot wound suffered by Mrs Aduwurka, 50, who now lies in hospital.

But while the sermon from the local pastor, Brother Balani, urged "prayers for those who God has taken away, and comfort for those who remain", it diplomatically avoided the more earthly question of who actually did it.

For one thing, no-one can be sure the killing was not simply the result of a private feud. And for another, Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sinful", and which wants hardline Sharia law across the whole of Nigeria, has a track record of killing anyone who points the finger at them publicly.

Yet some of the Adurkwa family's neighbouring Christian households have already made up their mind, fleeing the district for fear they might be next.

"We are going through a very difficult time because of Boko Haram," said Joseph Adams, 30, who lives nextdoor to the Aduwurkas. "Two weeks ago a nearby church was also burned down, and nine other Christians have been killed. Now all the houses around me are emptying."

Whether such killings really do herald the start of a pogrom of Christians remains in dispute. The Nigerian government, which is facing criticism for failing to curb Boko Haram's reign of terror, insists last week's threats were simply bluster, despite the deaths of some 23 Christians in two further attacks elsewhere in northern Nigeria on Thursday and Friday.

What is less in doubt is the alarming evolution of the sect, which has progressed from using machetes and poisoned arrows in its infancy to sophisticated carbombs and Mumbai-style mass gun attacks today.

Started as a religious study group in Maiduguri more than 15 years ago, it first took up arms under the leadership of a firebrand former civil servant, Mohammed Yusuf, and focused its wrath mainly against the Nigerian government, which it accused of neglecting the dirt-poor Muslim north.

Today, however, it is believed to be morphing into a new pan-African jihadist franchise, forging links with both al-Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb, which operates in the vast Sahara region north of Nigeria, and al-Shebab in Somalia.

Last August, in what diplomats fear may signal a campaign against Western interests in oil-rich Nigeria, it killed 24 people with a car bombing of the United Nations building in the capital, Abuja.

But what is causing even more worry is its parallel lurch into more sectarian violence, aggravating historic tensions between the Christian south and the Muslim north, and potentially destabilising West Africa's biggest and most powerful nation.

That new agenda was spelt out with a brutal sense of occasion on Christmas Day, when a car bomb killed 42 worshippers at morning mass at St Theresa's Catholic Church in Madalla, just outside Abuja.

Among the bereaved was Steady Esiri, who rushed to the scene to find a charred corpse wearing the distinctive Sunday best dress of his pregnant wife Uche, 26. Her eight-month old foetus had been torn from her womb.

"We were supposed to attend Mass together, but I was busy and planned to go the evening service instead," he said. "Then I heard a huge explosion, and when I rushed here I recognised her dress. She was a wonderful woman, a perfect housewife, now I will have to start my life again. What kind of people do this for political ends?"

For the Reverend Isaac Achi, who feared his 3,500 strong congregation might carry out reprisals against local Muslims, it was cause for a heartfelt sermon the following day reminding them of the Christian virtue of forgiveness.

"I told them revenge would just increase the number of souls dying on both sides," he said last week, looking out over church's wrecked facade, where Christmas decorations still hung lopsidedly. "But if the government cannot stop this kind of thing, I will be worried about the future of Nigeria."

For some Christian leaders, however, the time for meekness is over. In comments that angered Muslim leaders, the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Reverend Ayo Oritsejafor, branded the attacks a "declaration of war" against Christians, and warned that they would "have no choice but to respond appropriately " if the authorities failed to stop them.

Responding to the crisis last weekend, Nigeria's president, Goodluck Jonathan, declared a state of emergency throughout selected northern areas, including Maiduguri, a dusty frontier town near the border with Chad.

Troops, tanks and pick-up trucks of menacing-looking plain clothes police have flooded the city's sandy, unpaved boulevards, where motorbikes - long the favourite method for Boko Haram's hit and run attacks - have long been banned. Nevertheless, an air of menace remains, with the 6pm curfew enforced not just by the soldiers, as by the knowledge that the sect generally mounts attacks from late afternoon onwards. When The Sunday Telegraph visited last week, explosions and gunfire were heard during the hours of darkness.

Pacifying the city has been made harder by the local hostility to the security forces, whose heavy-handed approach has won few hearts and minds over the years.

In 2009, more than 700 people were killed when troops fought a five day battle against Boko Haram followers which culminated in the capture of their leader, Mr Yusuf. But the government's victory was marred by reports that he was summarily executed in police custody, a move that galvanised Yusuf supporters to regroup, and put some locals off cooperating with the authorities.

Last week, The Sunday Telegraph saw one street littered with burned out cars - allegedly set fire to by soldiers after locals failed to warn them of a bomb attack.

"They were angry because we did not give them any information," said one man, afraid to give his name. "But if we do, the sect will come after us. We're stuck in the middle."

Maiduguri, however, is not the only flashpoint city in the region, and nor do Muslim extremists have a monopoly on aggression. In the religiously mixed city of Jos, north of Abuja, Christians are held equally to blame for clashes that have claimed several thousand lives in the last decade alone.

The city, said to be an acronym for "Jesus Our Saviour", sits atop a balmy plateau that provides prime farming land and was once a favoured retreat for British colonials escaping the humid malarial climes of coastal Lagos. But it is jealously regarded as a historic fiefdom by the Christian Berom tribe, who still view the Muslim Hausas who came here a century ago as interlopers, despite having sold them much of their land.

On a walk through Jos's Bukuru district, scene of Muslim-Christian clashes which claimed 150 lives two years ago, the conflicting visions become clear. While the two groups still live side by side in dense shanty towns, patches of no-go-areas abound for each, and no two accounts of how 2010's bloodshed arose are alike.

"It is the Berom who cause the problems, trying to get their land back," said Mohamed Yakuba, 32, gesturing to a row of burned-out houses where his father and eight other relatives died during the clashes.

True, he is still on good terms with his Berom neighbour John Jang, who also lost his home. But when asked for his version of events, Mr Jang insists: "The Birom were simply retaliating for attacks that the Hausa started."

Yet while most Berom and Hausa still muddle along together in every day life - urged on by street posters saying "Stop this wickedness" - some of the Jos's politicians have a less compromising view. None more so than Toma Davou, 73, the Scripture-quoting leader of the Berom parliamentary forum, who greets foreign visitors to Jos by saying "Welcome to Beromland".

"The Hausas want to push us out, and although it is about land occupation, they say it is religious so that they can get the sympathy of Saudi Arabia and al-Qaeda," said Mr Davou. "Christians should arm to the teeth to meet this threat from them and Boko Haram."

Mr Davou is now campaigning for Nigeria to divide into separate Muslim and Christian states, a move that for many would evoke memories of the Biafran civil war of the 1960s.

The Nigerian government dismisses such talk, pointing out that the vast majority of its 150 million citizens get on with one another peaceably, but there is less clarity on the remedy for Boko Haram and al Qaeda, its new ally.

Some Nigerian officials even question whether the sect really exists, saying much of the havoc in Maiduguri is the work of criminal gangs who use its name to frighten people.

But others are convinced that Boko Haram's relationship is indeed having a fledgling relationship with al-Qaeda - not least Robert Fowler, a Canadian diplomat kidnapped by Al Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb while serving with the UN in Niger in 2008.

The gang who held him in the Sahara for 130 days repeatedly told him of their aim to destroy governments across central Africa as a precursor to establishing a pan-African caliphate. And among their number, they also included a Nigerian.

"It would be an obvious partnership to form, even if there isn't any hard evidence yet," Mr Fowler said. "The world should be worried, because Nigeria is a huge country, and if it implodes it will take the rest of West Africa with it."

Nigerians flee Boko Haram sectarian attacks

Hundreds of people have been fleeing areas of north-eastern Nigeria, after a 24-hour wave of violence apparently targeting Christian communities.

At least 29 people have died in four attacks in Adamawa state, prompting the state governor to impose a curfew.

The Islamist Boko Haram group has said it carried out several attacks.

One Boko Haram faction has warned all southerners - who are mostly Christian and animist - to leave the mainly Muslim north of Nigeria.

Last week President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Yobe and Borno states, as well as Plateau state in central Nigeria and Niger state in the west, following a surge in ethnic and sectarian violence.

Adamawa, which borders Borno state where Boko Haram emerged, was not included.

More than 500 people have been killed by the group over the past year.

President Jonathan, who is a Christian, has vowed to crack down on the group but Christian groups have accused him of not doing enough to protect them.

Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, said his members would protect themselves against the attacks.

"We have decided to work out means to defend ourselves against these senseless killings," he said, quoted by the Associated Press news agency.

The pattern of the killings suggested "systematic ethnic and religious cleansing", he added.

The pastor declined to be specific about how Christians would defend themselves, raising fears of retaliation and an escalation of the violence.

Who are Boko Haram?

At least 17 people were killed in Mubi, in Adamawa, as gunmen opened fire in a town hall where members of the Christian Igbo group were meeting.

They had been meeting to organise how to transport the body of an Igbo man who was shot dead by gunmen on motorbikes on Thursday evening.

"It was while they were holding the meeting that gunmen came and opened fire on them," a resident said.

More attacks on a church and hairdressing salon in Adamawa's capital, Yola, left more than 10 dead.

The attacks prompted state governor Murtala Nyako to impose a 24-hour curfew.

Security was tightened and troops were seen patrolling the streets.

A resident in Yola says all shops and businesses are closed and only essential services are being allowed through the deserted town.

Meanwhile people fled the streets of the town of Potiskum, in Yobe state, after an attack on banks and the police headquarters followed by a shoot-out between gunmen and security forces.

"We are afraid the soldiers will raid and burn our homes like they do in Maiduguri each time Boko Haram attack," local resident Amiru Umar told AFP.

The Islamist Boko Haram group said it had carried out the attacks in Mubi and Yola, and another in Gombe on Thursday night in which at least six people died.

The group has staged numerous attacks in northern and central areas in recent months - on Christmas Day it attacked a church near the capital, Abuja, killing dozens of people.

Boko Haram, whose name means 'Western education is forbidden', is fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state.

Meanwhile, the government is also facing the bleak prospect of a general strike in two days' time amid popular fury over its removal of a fuel subsidy which has seen fuel prices double for ordinary Nigerians.

The BBC's Mark Lobel in Lagos says the strike will overstretch the military, which already appears to have lost control of the situation in the north-east.

இந்நிலையில் சில நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு தேவகுமாரி கணவர் மற்றும் சகோதரர்கள் சந்திரசேகர், ரமேஷ் ஆகியோரிடம், 'ஏசு கிறிஸ்து தனது கனவில் தோன்றி மகளே நீ என்னிடம் வர விரும்பினால், உன்னை உயிருடன் சிலுவையில் அறைய ஒப்புக்கொடுக்க வேண்டும்' என்று கூறினார் என்று தெரிவித்தார். இதை கேட்டதும் அவரது குடும்பத்தினர் அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்தனர். தேவகுமாரியின் உறவினர்கள் வேண்டாம் இந்த விபரீதம் என்று கூறி தடுத்தனர். ஆனாலும் தேவகுமாரி சிலுவையில் அறைய வேண்டும் என்று தொடர்ந்து பிடிவாதம் பிடித்ததால் கணவர்- சகோதரர்கள் ஒன்றாகச் சேர்ந்து தேவகுமாரியை வெள்ளிக்கிழமை அன்று ஏசு கிறிஸ்து போல் சிலுவையில் அறைய திட்டமிட்டனர்.

ரத்தம் கொட்டியது

இதனையடுத்து தேவகுமாரியை கணவரும் சகோதரர்கள் சிலுவையின் மீது படுக்க வைத்து இடது கையில் ஆணி அறைந்தனர். அப்போது ரத்தம் மளமளவென கொட்டியது. அப்போதும் அவர் அசரவில்லை. வேதனையால் துடிக்கவில்லை. அமைதியாக இருந்தார். பின்னர் அவரது இரு கைகளையும் கயிற்றால் கட்டி சிலுவையை தூக்கி நிறுத்தினர். ஏசு கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு அணிவிக்கப்பட்டது போல் தேவகுமாரிக்கும் முள் கிரீடம் தலையில் சூட்டப்பட்டது. சிலர் தங்களது செல்போன்களில் இதை ஆர்வமாக படம் பிடித்தனர்.

கணவன், சகோதரர்கள் கைது

தகவல் அறிந்ததும் தாடே பள்ளி சப்- இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் கோடீஸ்வரராவ் மற்றும் போலீசார் அங்கு விரைந்து சென்றனர். பின்னர் அவர்கள் சிலுவையில் ஆணி அடிக்கப்பட்டு தொங்கவிடப்பட்டிருந்த தேவகுமாரியை கீழே இறக்கி அங்குள்ள தனியார் ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் சிகிச்சைக்காக சேர்த்தனர். சிலுவையில் அறைந்த பிரான்சிஸ், சந்திரசேகர், ரமேஷ் ஆகியோரை போலீசார் கைது செய்தனர்.

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Police have arrested the head teacher at a college in southern Bangladesh after a book considered blasphemous by some Muslims was found in the school's library, an official said Wednesday.

Police officer Abdul Malek said S.M. Yunus Ali was arrested for possessing the novel "Lajja," or "Shame," written by exiled writer Taslima Nasrin.

Malek said Ali, head teacher at the K.C. Technical and Business Management College, could face up to three years in jail if he is found guilty of authorizing the book's inclusion in the library.

The Prothom Alo newspaper said Wednesday that Ali denied having the book and said he was the victim of a conspiracy.

Police corruption and misuse of police investigations by politicians are widespread in Bangladesh.

The novel was banned a year after its publication in 1993 and Nasrin was forced to flee Bangladesh to escape death threats from radical Muslims who considered it blasphemous for advocating secularism. She has been living in India and Europe since then.

Islam terror group tells Christians: Leave north Nigeria or be attacked

Christians have been warned by a militant Islamist group to leave northern Nigeria or be attacked, according to media reports.

Abul Qaqa, a purported spokesman for Boko Haram, said the terror group was “giving a three-day ultimatum to the southerners living in the northern part of Nigeria to move away”, the English language Vanguard newspaper reported.

The group has been linked to many attacks on Christians, most notably the bombings on Christmas Day killed 49 people, most of them at a Catholic church as services were ending.

Nigeria’s 160 million people are divided between the mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.

Qaqa said Boko Garam wished "to call on our fellow Muslims to come back to the north".

The BBC reported that Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, declared a state of emergency on Saturday in parts of four states hard hit by violence blamed on Boko Haram.

It said Mr Jonathan vowed to "crush" the group, which he said "started as a harmless group" but had "now grown cancerous".

Human rights activist Shehu Sani told CNN that the latest Boko Haram threat was credible, but many Christians born and raised in the north have nowhere else to go.

"The killings will continue," he told CNN, adding that the state of emergency and an enhanced presence of the security forces would not improve the situation, alleging that troops had already been involved in human rights abuses and had done little to reduce violence.

David Cook of Rice University, who has studied the rise of Boko Haram, told CNN that "if radical Muslim violence on a systematic level were to take hold in Nigeria ... it could eventually drive the country into a civil war."

The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal upheld the verdict of the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court which sentenced a woman to three months in jail for publishing indecent photos of herself on one of the websites, reported 'Al Bayan'.

The family court also issued a ruling of her being divorced from her husband without getting her dowry.

The husband had filed a complaint accusing his wife of publishing nude pictures on pornographic sites.

Investigations revealed that nine pictures were real and five fake.

Meanwhile, the woman - a government employee - accused her husband of taking such photos on his mobile phone under the influence of alcohol to get rid of her and to deprive her of the custody of her children as well as the dowry.

But when the Court of Appeal dismissed her appeal, saying the pictures speak of her act, she justified it by claiming that she took such photos on her husband's demand because he missed her when she was not around.

Horrific abuse of girls and women acceptable in Afghanistan

Authorities in northern Baghlan province say they were aware of reports that the girl was tortured after she refused to be forced into prostitution

Afghan girls, forced to marry when they are children or teenagers, are being tortured not only by their older husbands, but often by their family or in-laws. Usually it's for no reason at all except that they are female.

Women throughout Afghanistan are suffering domestic abuse, very often at the hands of their own family or in-laws. The BBC reports it was given a video which can be seen here, that reveals the extensive injuries inflicted upon a 15-year old Afghan child bride. The girl, Sahar Gul was married off to a 30-year-old man seven months ago, when she was 14.

Sahar was rescued by local police who were contacted by her family after they weren't able to see or visit her for several months. They found her locked up in the basement of her in-law's house, a dark room with no windows. She told them she had had her nails and clumps of her hair pulled out. Police say big chunks of the flesh on her body had been cut out with pliers.

Rahima Zarifi, director of the Women's Affairs Department in Baghlan, said the girl was severely tortured all the time, both physically and mentally, and that although the physical scars might heal, the psychological scars are not likely to.

Baghlan police official Jawid Basharat says Sahar explained that she was abused by her father-in-law, her husband, her sister-in-law, brother-in-law and her mother-in-law. She says it was the mother-in-law who pulled out her hair and nails.Authorities in northern Baghlan province say they were aware of reports that the girl was tortured after she refused to be forced into prostitution, but they were unable to confirm it.Police arrested Sahar's in-laws, but her husband managed to flee.

Human rights activists are concerned that the abuse of young and old females in Afghanistan, especially in its rural areas, stays on the sideline as the international community focuses on its military activities in that country, and puts little emphasis and less pressure on Afghan authorities over human rights.

In just the second quarter of this year alone, the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission reports 1,026 cases of violence against women. That compares with the total of all of last year of 2,700. And the group points out that these are just the cases that are actually reported, as most cases go unreported. Many girls who are being abused in Aghanistan burn themselves to get out of the situation. Many kill themselves by this method, others are severely injured.

Afghan law permits girls to be married at the age of 16. But almost half of them are married off when they are younger than that. Often, they have not even reached their teenage years. The torture occurs sometimes for no reason at all, or because the husband accuses the girl of having an affair, or orders her to become a prostitute to make money for him, and she refuses.

Her friend had made the mistake of refusing to marry a Shababcommander. Now she was about to get her head bashed in, rock by rock.

“You’re next,” the Shabab warned the girl, a frail 17-year-old who was living with her brother in a squalid refugee camp.

Several months later, the men came back. Five militants burst into her hut, pinned her down and gang-raped her, she said. They claimed to be on a jihad, or holy war, and any resistance was considered a crime against Islam, punishable by death.

“I’ve had some very bad dreams about these men,” she said, having recently escaped the area they control. “I don’t know what religion they are.”

Somalia has been steadily worn down by decades of conflict and chaos, its cities in ruins and its people starving. Just this year, tens of thousands have died from famine, with countless others cut down in relentless combat. Now Somalis face yet another widespread terror: an alarming increase in rapes and sexual abuse of women and girls.

The Shabab militant group, which presents itself as a morally righteous rebel force and the defender of pure Islam, is seizing women and girls as spoils of war, gang-raping and abusing them as part of its reign of terror in southern Somalia, according to victims, aid workers and United Nations officials. Short of cash and losing ground, the militants are also forcing families to hand over girls for arranged marriages that often last no more than a few weeks and are essentially sexual slavery, a cheap way to bolster their ranks’ flagging morale.

But it is not just the Shabab. In the past few months, aid workers and victims say, there has been a free-for-all of armed men preying upon women and girls displaced by Somalia’s famine, who often trek hundreds of miles searching for food and end up in crowded, lawless refugee camps where Islamist militants, rogue militiamen and even government soldiers rape, rob and kill with impunity.

With the famine putting hundreds of thousands of women on the move — severing them from their traditional protection mechanism, the clan — aid workers say more Somali women are being raped right now than at any time in recent memory. In some areas, they say, women are being used as chits at roadblocks, surrendered to the gunmen staffing the barrier in the road so that a group of desperate refugees can pass.

“The situation is intensifying,” said Radhika Coomaraswamy, the United Nations’ special representative for children and armed conflict. All the recent flight has created a surge in opportunistic rapes, she said, and “for the Shabab, forced marriage is another aspect they are using to control the population.”

In the past two months, from Mogadishu alone, the United Nations says it has received more than 2,500 reports of gender-based violence, an unusually large number here. But because Somalia is a no-go zone for most operations, United Nations officials say they are unable to confirm the reports, leaving the work to fledgling Somali aid organizations under constant threat.

Somalia is a deeply traditional place, where 98 percent of girls are subject to genital cutting, according to United Nations figures. Most girls are illiterate and relegated to their homes. When they venture out, it is usually to work, trudging through the rubble-strewn alleyways wrapped head to toe in thick black cloth, often lugging something on their back, the equatorial sun burning down on them.

The famine and mass displacement, which began over the summer, have made women and girls more vulnerable. Many Somali communities have been disbanded, and with armed groups forcing men and boys into their militias, it is often single women, with children in tow, who set off on the dangerous odyssey to refugee camps.

At the same time, aid workers and United Nations officials say the Shabab, who are fighting Somalia’s transitional government and imposing a harsh version of Islam in the areas they control, can no longer pay their several thousand fighters the way they used to. Much as they seize crops and livestock, giving their militants what they call “temporary wives” is how the Shabab keep many young men fighting for them.

But these are hardly marriages, said Sheik Mohamed Farah Ali, a former Shabab commander who defected to the government army.

I'm allowed to kill infidels, man tells judge

ABU DHABI // A mentally disturbed man who stabbed a witness to death in court told an appeals court judge yesterday that as a Muslim he was entitled to kill "infidels".

The judge told BAM, an Egyptian, that he should exercise his rights by using the law, "and not go around killing people".

BAM first appeared in court last year, accused of causing a permanent injury to a Nepalese man, LK. Released on bail, he then stabbed LK to death in his room.

Later he took the murder weapon to court and killed another Nepalese man who was giving evidence on behalf of LK.

Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance found him guilty, and ordered that he receive psychiatric treatment.

Prosecutors appealed on the ground that BAM was not mentally ill but knew perfectly well what he was doing. They pointed out that while claiming he killed the two men because they were infidels, he chose to kill only people who were giving evidence against him in a criminal court case.

The Court of Cassation returned the case to the Court of Appeals.

"I'm an Arab Muslim and in an Arab Muslim country," BAM told the court yesterday. "Those infidels are killing Muslims all around the world … there was a Muslim doctor just killed in Germany and when her husband wanted to defend her they attacked him as well."

The judge said he was not concerned with what happened in other countries, and that justice would be served.

He said it was never part of Islamic law, even in an Islamic state, to kill people because of their beliefs, or to take revenge.

A representative from the Nepalese Embassy told the court relatives of the two victims would be seeking blood money.

The judge reserved his verdict, and adjourned the case until January 11 for the representative to present his certificate showing that the men's families had given him power of attorney.
